What is a Sprint worth?

I am not sure that the value allocated to the Sprints is appropriate.

Binder's inspired Sprint win is worth only two points more than Miller's solid sixth place in the GP. More questionably Binder also still had to start from way down the back in the GP, unlike the WSBK arrangements.

I feel sorry for the non listed Bastianni and PEspargaro both injured, absent and on zero .

I had been thinking about that too, but I do wonder whether the Ezpeletas think it might just be too much chaos if that 12 lap rolling brawl was for full points. Certainly the riders are earning those points (in a different way to those earned in the feature race), but would even higher carnage break the manufacturers (and mechanics)?

The points for Sprint seem about right but I wonder whether Sprint results should feed into qualifying for the GP.

The qualifying format is a good spectacle but it only measures one lap pace which is far more relevant to the Sprint race than the GP. Currently qualifying potentially has a huge impact on both the Sprint and the GP.

The half distance Sprint race should be a better indicator of full length race pace than a one lap flyer.and a reward for a good Sprint race could be the points plus a good starting place in the GP. The Binder situation is probably going to be a one off as I can't see others doing so well in the sprint race after such poor qualifying. However Binder might have been able to avoid the early race contact that ruined his GP if his starting position was higher as a result of his good Sprint performance. .

The drawback of carrying the position from sprint the race (like the do in F1), is that if you get punted for no fault of your own and crash you then get a double punishment as you start the main race from the back row. I do feel for Binder who deserved more after his amazing sprint, but I prefer this than the alternative personally.

Not that different from if you qualify poorly due to a yellow (someone else's error)  wiping out your best lap. A double penalty for poor qualification exists, penalty in both Sprint and GP.

WSBK Sprint result only sets up top 9 for main races, rest based on qualification.

Although best laps do get wiped and riders start from lower than their potential it is rare that a rider loses all of their laps due to mistakes, weather and flags. They tend to be within a row or two of their potential.

Personally i wouldn't touch the qualifying format, it makes friday very important.  Points are ok for sprint race.  Clearly it takes less 'skill' to win a sprint than a GP and the points should reflect this.  A rider doesn't have to get ideal set-up, worry about riding with a full fuel tank, worry too much about tyres going off, and to a degree racecraft goes out the window.

FB is still the favourite for the title but it would be great if Bezzecchi could keep him honest.  I was gutted when Bastiani was taken out, thought he would be the one to take take the title fight to FB.  MM & FQ are still the best riders on the grid but their bikes are not good enough to mount a title challenge.

KTM benefiting from Miller

Everyone was questioning the pace the of KTM's after testing. Looked a bit lost. Now after two race weekends, the bikes look to be very competitive, and already a race winner. Good to see them getting a return on their steady investment. Credit for this I think goes to the Duc guys KTM hired, and to Jack Miller who has always been a good development rider. Fully believe Pecco's title run last year had a lot to do with Miller's calm influence in the Duc garage. I forget which race it was last year, but Pecco was no where in early Q1. Pulled in, sat down and looked lost. Video captured Miller setting down with Pecco, asking him what he was feeling, then walking him through the corners where he was struggling. Pecco left the garage calmer and eventually qualified P1. All Miller's doing, no one else in the garage said a word. Tardozzi looked pissed. The rest exasperated. Pecco (and the Duc garage) are going to miss that this year. With host of fast Duc riders breathing down his neck, expect more mistakes from the champ. Binder and KTM the beneficiary this year. If Miller can school Binder to qualify better, the Sunday Man could be a title contender.

Running away with it..

FB has already shown some weakness when it comes to big time pressure moments, but is very much Bipolar with it because he has also shown great resilience to it at times.

Ducati face a situation where not only will they all be stealing points off of one another at the pointy end, but they'll also be adding a lot pressure and that may be the undoing of their efforts, depending on how precious they are in response to it. Aprilia and KTM will cash in lots of points, and Marc will cause his fair share of pressure moments for them too.

The next half a dozen rounds will have some intrigue that's for sure.

I agree with your observations regarding Jack. He has been a valuable acquisition for KTM and I think we will see them and him on a seriously upward trajectory as the season progresses.

About the predictions -

I was wondering where and when to see the motomutterers predictions we made before the season began?  This is my first time participating and I’m not sure how it works.  Thanks!
