Fixed top banner on Main Site

Post by gixxerwimp »

Recently, the top banner on the Main Site became fixed, i.e. it doesn't move when you scroll down the page (at least in FireFox 3 and Chrome 10). I find this rather inconvenient, as it takes up valuable vertical screen space for the articles and photos. Also, using "page up/down" to scroll doesn't work properly as the browser seems to calculate based on the full page height, which includes the top banner, resulting in several lines being skipped when scrolling that way.

Love the site David. Pretty much my one and only source for MotoGP news.

Couldn't find a thread on this, so apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere.

Hey, I know you. You're the guy who made my day with the HD Eurosport caps. Much thanks.

I really like the static header on my desktop but now I have only my laptop with has a high resolution but is really narrow top to bottom whihc leaves me in the same place as you. I can see about 1 paragraph maybe a little more at a time. I have to be very careful with scrolling or I will skip sections of a column.

I like having the navigation always available but I think the header is a bit to big for this sort of application.

David Emmett is probably working on getting back from Qatar so he may not see this for a couple of days.

The problem is trying to find a balance between user friendliness and advertiser friendliness. Advertisers like the fixed banner. I may try and make the header smaller, though. I'll see what I can do, but it might take a while ...

If you're using Firefox, you can use Greasemonkey add-on to make the header movable.

@Kropotkin&RatsMC: I hope it's ok to post this, if not, please just delete this post.

After installing Greasemonkey, right-click on the little monkey-head in your add-on bar, and choose "New user script".
This is what I have entered in the form:

Code: Select all

Name: motomatters-header
Namespace: motomatters
Description: Stops the header from being fixed to the top
Includes: http://motomatters.com/*
Excludes: http://motomatters.com/forum/*
In the next step, Greasemonkey should ask you which editor to use.
Now you can edit the script in your editor.
The final script should look something like this:

Code: Select all

// ==UserScript==
// @name           motomatters-header
// @namespace      motomatters
// @description Stops the header from being fixed to the top
// @include        http://motomatters.com/*
// @exclude        http://motomatters.com/forum/*
// ==/UserScript==

GM_addStyle("#header { position: absolute; }");
The script does nothing more than to change a CSS parameter to make the header go away with the rest when you are scrolling.

No problem! If it helps regular readers, that's great. And I rather suspect that the number of readers using Greasemonkey will not be the majority of the audience...

Cool! :)
The majority will probably not use Greasemonkey, but some netbook-users might consider installing it.

Thanks for the greasemonkey tip, gsx750f!
Sounds like it'll take care of my minor "issue".

Update: Got it installed - works like a charm!
