2021 Sachsenring MotoGP FP2 Result: Oliveira Stays In The Limelight

The second practice session for the premier class got hot and hard – hot in terms of track conditions and hard when it came to tyre choice in sweltering Sachsenring. After laying low in FP1, Barcelona victor Miguel Oliveira traded the lead of FP2 with Marc Marquez and ended up on top after acing the time attack in the final five minutes of the session. The KTM man eventually demoted the factory Yamaha duo of Fabio Quartararo and Maverick Viñales, the Frenchman particularly focused on long runs and only joining the top 10 for the time attack. With all three riders showing excellent pace throughout the 45 minutes, it was a tough ask for the recovering Alex Rins to do any better but the Spaniard managed to keep within four tenths of the leader and with pretty solid pace of his own.

After adding another crash at turn 3 to his to-do list on Friday, Pol Espargaro managed to join the top five, narrowly ahead of colleague Takaaki Nakagami. Aleix Espargaro and Johann Zarco were the last riders within half a second of the leader but with Jack Miller not too far back in ninth place. Franco Morbidelli overcame a slow start to his weekend and climbed up to claim a provisional top 10 position.

Having led the way at the halfway mark of the session, Marc Marquez focused on putting both the hard and the medium rear tyre through their paces and skipped the time attack altogether, which saw him demoted from second to 12th in the final minutes of the session. Joan Mir did have a go on soft rubber but it only served him to take 16th place and will join his compatriot in the chase for a top 10 on Saturday morning. The list of hopefuls will also include Danilo Petrucci, Brad Binder and Pecco Bagnaia, the Ducati man ending the session last.

... unassailable, much like he did during the race at the previous round. An end to Marc's run at the Sachsenring by KTM would be stunning.

All those prognosticators who imagined a Marquez victory at the Sachsenring would be inevitable seem to have forgotten that manufacturers other than Honda have made progress during the time Marquez was convalescing. 

I am enjoying tremendously the irony that KTM's progress has been aided by Pedrosa, who was disposed of by Puig.

 

 

 

 

With the comments coming out of Malaysia , since refuted , it seems Rossi is doing his chances of being resigned no help with his continuing poor performances . Add reports that Rossi was trying to do a deal with Yamaha for them to supply the bikes for his VR46 team - leaving Petronas without bikes - and his pitbox must be a very uncomfortable place this weekend .

KTM has answered the assymetric tire problem, looks good. At least in the heat on hards. Oliveira carries momentum.

I wouldn't say Marc looks like himself yet. A bit more wooden. But he is keeping things tidy, not having moments of overriding. Running his regular program and staying on the bike. Looks smart. Plenty fast.

Maverick may have more tomorrow. He looks focused. 

Our crashes are easy offs for the rider today, not such a big deal. Tight turning track tugs the traction out from under you without warning on a few corners, the limit comes unannounced. 

There is a kid that has been on the phone with Aqua. His seat is assured, the announcement is the only remaining matter. Before an announcement is a signing. Before signing is a handshake. Before handshake, a phone call. I bet it is between handshake and signing. Who is it? Wouldn't it be Raul?

This Moto2 crop about to be harvested looks good! Only a couple seats available, the stew stays on the stove. Acosta will get Gardner's seat, he isn't going to wait, and a 2022 MotoGP seat could very well be part of the contract. Orange could lose him in the huge 2022 shuffle, there is going to be a fierce pursuit including a big sum of money. 

Binder isn't done, watching him this wknd. 

The Red rider battle is hot. Chill Zarco and fervent Jack are such a contrast! Miller has a sector 3 to work on, and may get somewhere with it by Sunday (his sector 1 is gorgeous). Zarco's potential is less immediately apparent, it may be that he arrives soon with a little bit more than he has to date. It seems to be his nature - surprise with a step up, then just eyebrows and a shrug about it. Bagnaia is not on the pace. Come on Pecco! You can do it mate! Can't you? Martin, how much of this now is fitness vs rookie teething? Is he in a brief repose after his zealous start to 2021?

The 2 tenths behind Oliveira are difficult to come by. Nice work Miguel and KTM! See you tomorrow.
