2020 Portimao MotoGP FP2 Result: Zarco Sets The Pace

The premier class got another hour to enjoy the wonders of the Algarve Circuit and nice warm asphalt welcomed them and opened the floodgates on times in the 1:39s. While KTM and Honda hogged the limelight early in the session, it was Yamaha and Ducati who fought for the lead by the final time attack. Ducati got the upper hand this time out and it was courtesy of Johann Zarco aboard the 2019 machine, the Frenchman one tenth of a second faster than Maverick Vinales. Aleix Espargaro was once more inside the top three, two tenths off top spot and ahead of Fabio Quartararo.

Brad Binder rounded out the top five, while Joan Mir found himself outside of the top 10 positions going into his last flying lap but the world champion used that final lap well and climbed into sixth. Andrea Dovizioso was in a similar situation as he claimed 7th place, ahead of Pol Espargaro. Jack Miller and Franco Morbidelli completed the top 10 positions, while Stefan Bradl missed out by two hundredths of a second. The Honda rider continued to have a good day in Portugal, as he spent significant time at the top of the timesheets before dropping outside the top 10 despite being less than half a second off top spot.

Takaaki Nakagami had an eventful afternoon, the LCR man going down at turn 4 in the final 30 minutes of the extended session and he was able to rejoin and improve his laptime but still got pushed down to 12th. Miguel Oliveira started the session at the top of the timesheets but the home favourite got demoted in the late battle for the top 10 and dropped back to 13th. Alex Rins will hope to improve on 17th position on the combined standings on Saturday morning, although the Spaniard was within only eight tenths of top spot. Turn 4 proved problematic for Valentino Rossi as well, the Italian rejoining the action after a late crash but only fast enough for 21st position.

This TRACK, gah! I am in love. Phillip Island and Laguna Seca had a baby. Between T8 and T9 is nearly BSB jump. Riding style is on lovely display. Perfect conditions now, and more rubber going down. 

Binder! Wow mate. Nakagami's crash was front end late in turn in, might be called "that Honda" one. Zarco! Lots to see, here is a 25min FP2 edit for you.

Joe Roberts to Aprilia? Huh, not sure about that AND love the guy. Re going to Aprilia now, 1) the bike's reliability has improved. 2) it is a conventional good handling and relatively accessible bike. 3) of course you can be measured against your team mate, so Aleix is your target. 4) the bike is an infant becoming a toddler and should be about to make a step forward - data is there for the year, engine can get dialed a step more wick and optimized. 5) Don't forget that the other rookies are on the 2020 Ducati (and a KTM) - Orange is a bit up and down still, and going Red is NOT a smooth adaption for ANYONE. It can be a career stalling impasse. Not easy to go from pilot to astronaut, and facing the ghosts of aliens. Aprilia is no pariah in my view. Nor the 2020 Duc a sure bet. That imaginary 2nd Suzuki Team however...     ;)

How a factory can go from dominating a season in the hands of a talented wildman to being so irrelevant that even the most faithful racing enthousiasts forget all about their existence. 2020 just keeps on distorting the universe.

On topic: Man, how I've wished for years MotoGP would come to Portimão. And now it is already even better than I thought, in that glorious weather. It is promising to be a very worthy finale to the most insane season ever. Now if only Aleix could put that beautiful Aprilia on the rostrum for good measure. That'd be terrific.

Ohmegarsh yes Peeve! How wonderful is this TRACK!?! Not exaggerating, we have been blessed with a great gift to treasure. FookdaTilkes, THIS is motorcycle racing.

Ducati - not forgotten. Missed. Some attack management, there are a few reasons to. Some are disappointed in riders, there are some reasons for that. Some get a PhD in analyzing their rocket, reasons for that too. But they haven't ever lost our interest. 

The Aprilia, hmm. Their 250's were brilliant. Their Superbike kitted for MotoGP punched way above it's weight in the CRT days and impressed. I love their V4 Superbike! It's only Achilles is Aprilia electronics, which if course is no longer a thing in MotoGP. As Suzuki attests, David(e) has been handed a crucial weapon, and Goliaths Two have faltered. Orange has done the business, and isn't finished. Suzuki broke the ceiling. Yamaha and Honda fell through the hole. Ducati is really hard to call a trajectory on. Aprilia is the little engine that couldn't as of yet. But right now, given the lay of the land, it is not a bad choice for a rookie. Right now Savadori looks to have undertaken a job interview opportunity. Wishing him luck. 

Viva #27 by the way. Missing that blasting rear wheel pivot and having his own signature lines. I remember being quite impressed seeing him racing an LCR bike, nudging at the front pack as a quiet nice kid with fidgety eyes that had longing in them. 

Every single rider went faster in fp2 than fp1! Many reduced their laptimes by quite a lot.

When Dorna decided that 5 races on the Iberian peninsular was too many & cancelled Estoril. I wanted a motorsickle grand prix in Portugal. SBK did Portimão. I was keen for MotoGp to go. At last the day has arrived Yipee!!

My mistake I forgot Honda. How could that happen? Stefan Bradl first Honda in 11th.

I'd better take myself for a ride on my CRF.
