2020 Teruel MotoGP Qualifying Result: New Is Always Better

Another crucial and somewhat dramatic qualifying session for the premier class got underway in a warm Saturday afternoon at Motorland Aragon and it was a momentous achievement for Takaaki Nakagami. The Japanese rider was fastest throughout Q2 and never allowed anyone to get a proper taste at pole, becoming the sixth pole sitter of the season and the first Japanese one in the premier class in 16 years. Franco Morbidelli came as close as six hundredths of a second of pole but will be happy enough starting from the middle of the front row. Alex Rins found himself chasing qualifying expert Fabio Quartararo on his final flying lap and used the deluxe tow to place himself on the front row of the grid, which bodes well for Suzuki given what he did from fourth row last time out.

Maverick Vinales came nearly four tenths short of pole and opens row two of the grid, ahead of Q1 escapee Johann Zarco. The Frenchman was the only Ducati to escape the first qualifying session and despite a late crash he did well to finish fifth, ahead of compatriot Quartararo, whose couple of moments at the final turn cost him a go at pole.

Zarco’s crash made quite a few victims on the timesheets initally but after all the times were reinstated post-session, without much explanation offered, Cal Crutchlow opened row three ahead of Miguel Oliveira and Pol Espargaro. The Spaniard was the fastest man in Q1 but ran out of soft tyres for Q2 and the mediums were only fast enough for ninth place. 

With penalties also reversed for rookies Alex Marquez and Iker Lecuona, the Spaniards scored their best starting positions. Meanwhile, Joan Mir was the slowest rider in the session and left himself with a lot of work to do to defend the championship lead. However, the Spaniard won’t be as miserable as title rival Andrea Dovizioso, the disappointing Ducati show ending in Q1 with Jack Miller 14th, Dovizioso 17th and Danilo Petrucci 19th.

... performance from Taka-san, seeing a Japanese rider at the pointy end is long over due. However, can we get a hand for Franco on the slowest bike on the grid snatching 2nd on the grid?! It's almost shameful that he will once again be stuck with that engine spec next year as well despite his front-row talent. I'm surprised a powerhouse team like Petronas would let that stand for 2021.

Petronas has to run what Yamaha has. Blue shat the bed on the motor last Winter.

Now? No Euro Test at all. And they are in process of handing the VR46 Resource Powerhouse to Ducati. They got the rider squad. Even the tires came their way.

I love motogp at the moment. Really exciting with lot's pf curve balls, everyone can have a go at pole or the race win and most of the participants, team bosses, riders, etc. come across as humble, approachable people. They are happy to be interviewed, to answer questions and talk. And not to forget those that commentate and report on this sport. Knowledgeable, informed, not afraid to ask difficult questions and state their opinions.While there is a whole lot of money in the sport it has not had the negative impact it had on many other disciplines. Close in fp4, close in qualy and it is going to be close in the race. In fp4 it was Viñales & Taka san a bit faster, Q Nakagami & Morbidelli were a little quicker than the rest of the field. 3rd to 18th or 20th was about 1 second, all riders fairly evenly spaced. last 2 a bit slower.

How consistent was JZ5? Q1 & Q2 times within a gnat's whisker 1m 47.303 seconds Q1 1m 47.297 seconds in Q2. Go Zarco!

Nakagami's mind is free. His self-worth has been appreciated and now rides with an unfettered consciousness. So far, the results speak for themselves. Senior management at Ducati Corse could learn a thing or two here. They reap what they sow...
