2018 Jerez November MotoGP Test Wednesday: Ducatis Fastest, Nakagami Surprises

Danilo Petrucci topped the first day of testing at Jerez, the Italian the only rider to get into the 1'37s. He beat factory Ducati teammate Andrea Dovizioso by two tenths of a second, though Dovizioso had a crash at the end of the session, which stopped him pushing for a fast time.

Takaaki Nakagami pulled a surprise on the LCR Honda, the Japanese rider getting a tow off Petrucci to shoot to the third fastest time, ahead of Maverick Viñales on the factory Yamaha. Viñales' teammate Valentino Rossi could manage only the 17th fastest time, but was hampered by a problem with the engine, Rossi stopping the bike when it made a worrying noise. Marc Marquez ended the first day in fifth spot, half a second behind Petrucci, and just ahead of Petronas SRT's Franco Morbidelli, the Italian fast on the satellite Yamaha. Jorge Lorenzo led the session at one point, before dropping to seventh, two tenths off the time of his teammate.

With a qualifying tyre. Important difference to make there.

I'm too lazy to check but would assume that SBK riders have soft qualifiers to chase a fast lap at The test.

That time puts Rea just ahead of Jorge Lorenzo (1m 38.749s) and behind Franco Morbidellie (1m 38.659s).  Reminds a few of us of the days when Graeme Crosby would race a Yoshimura Kawasaki in open class races, beating a lot of riders on RG500 Suzukis or Yamaha TZ750s.  Needless to say, when he got on a pure-bred racer, he was right at the front.
