2014 Mugello MotoGP QP Results: Field Blitzed Under Blistering Sun

Marc Marquez has taken his sixth consecutive pole position of 2014 following MotoGP qualifying at Mugello. The unstoppable Spanish sensation lit up the Italian circuit in familiar fashion with a time of 1:47.270, only a tenth shy of Dani Pedrosa's pole record from last year. Andrea Iannone put in a fine performance aboard his Ducati to delight the parochial home crowd and end the session just under two tenths behind Marquez. Jorge Lorenzo took a solid third place and completes the front row starters for tomorrow's race. 

Having set the pace in the two practice sessions before, Dani Pedrosa left it late to set an acceptable but slightly disappointing fourth quickest time of the session. He will be joined on the second row by Pol Espargaro, who suffered another big crash towards the end of proceedings and Ducati's Cal Crutchlow. Fellow Brit Bradley Smith heads up row three ahead of Andrea Dovizioso and satellite Honda rider Stefan Bradl. While his race pace is looking solid Valentino Rossi failed to fire in his 300th qualifying session, 'The Doctor' was left to settle for tenth place on the grid and will have his work cut out for him on Sunday.

Completing the fourth row will be Alvaro Bautista and Aleix Espargaro after both riders managed to make their way through the Q2 session before.

So bautista barely made it into QP2 , 0.44 ahead of redding, whose bike was 20 KMH slower

Looking at reddings speed times he was around 315 unless he got a tow

Methinks they should let Redding take a spin on Alvaros bike....

EDIT: I was looking at the best sector data and Scott loses .43 on the front straight alone....

Performance of the Honda production racer has been discussed ad nauseam here. If one of the riders were to be upgraded to a factory satellite bike, I wouldn't think Redding the most deserving one. And BTW, I'm pretty sure sector data does not isolate the front straight alone.

A few interesting things are happening, and manner in which these things are happening is what is REALLY interesting. Oh Mugello, and this new arising era in MotoGP how I loveth thee!

Let us start with three great stories, the first being Marc Marquez and his fabulous manner of riding the great HRC machine. We are blessed to be in the presence of this rider and much can be said, and has been, about what he is able to make consistently possible. Blessed is not the word I would choose in regards to our having the Factory Honda, but is what might be said of every rider that is on one. That bike is overdog by design of the rules ajd those that have made them as they are.

Or may I say WERE, as that is what drives my next two points. Look at Ducati! Look at Iannone! Look at the spread of Qual times above the "Qual 1 Cup" entrants...look at how tight 2nd-10th is. Yes, Iannone has a super soft, but A DUCATI IS 2ND and it is #29. Hernandez is an anomoly, the championship electronics are shaping up great, and Ducati is out of the gravel trap and back on the race line. At Mugello. How long has it been since coverage at the pointy end had announcers saying "and just look at that Ducati power driving onto the straight?" Yep, I am listening for it.

For me here is the main story of Mugello 2014: Who is doing What and How aboard the Yamaha? Tires continue to evolve, and this tire finally gets it right. Lorenzo can't ask for anything more from set up with this 2014 Factory Yamaha. He has edge grip and a carcass that behaves well. The bike has developed about as well as that I4 w 20L and two handfuls of motors allows. Here lay the rub of our big story, Who is making the major forward gains on the Yamaha? P Espargaro and B Smith! How? Yamaha has embraced looser more active riding styles. Tech 3 has BOTH of its bikes developing something new that could be VERY SPECIAL when they go Open next year with Yamaha's passionate support. Do you see it yet?

Smith I apologize AGAIN for saying you were the English version of Aoyama and that a dozen riders deserved your seat. (Yes, I say much worse schtuff than this actually). He is on a different frame w a substantially different sub-frame set up to allow him to move his body around a bunch over a bike that is not 'butter and metronome' braking through apex. And Pol Espargaro is looking to me like Casey Stoner did this time of yr on the LCR machine when he was starting to break out of orbit and into Alien territory. That kid is up to something. That BIKE is up to something, and it is no longer "Lorenzo's bike." In addition to the Hammer and Butter it is able to also be ridden with an Egg Beater, and if Lorenzo can rise once again he will need this. He is finding a toughness and pushing, let us see if he can pull together his 2013 form with which he did the impossible. More interesting to me is that we get to see what the Yamaha can do right now at Mugello with several concurrently developing bikes and riders.

Which leads us to Pedrosa and Rossi. And fighting spirit. And racecraft. This is a defining moment for both of these men and their futures. Now or never Dani, reach deeply and trancend doubt itself. Rossi you are characterizing the close of your career now.

It is the future. It has the past. We are very blessed. MUGELLO!

... Rossi's qualifying tanked the way it did. But I'll be honest if seeing him start from 10th at Mugello isn't even more exciting :)

Whose going to break the Yamaha duck that is 2014? All I hope for is that George breaks away and Marc has to play catch up again. Then again Pol is one very quick learner and racer. Any glitches amongst the top guns may yield a China surprise of note. Then there is Valentino. Bogged down in 10th is not good for his cause. Then again there is the Ducati duck since 2010. The possibility of a win for them in Mugello is about as probable as Dani winning the title for HRC. I said that deliberately. He may well yet. Marc is riding within 95% of what he is capable of, but Dani is, I believe, too.
For what its worth my chrystal ball suggests a Yamaha win and some frightening desmo top speeds. Therein lies George and Valentino's game plan.
They have the bikes. They need to get away clean, conserve the tyres and slipstream the Ducatis's. Let the HRC Aces squabble amongst themselves for the first 10 laps while they ruin rubber trying to bust the desmo's.
What do I know? For me Mugello is the highlight of the season and...well...

Rossi is down in 10th! Now we'll have something to watch-race pace suggests that Marc isn't that strong-neither is Dani-both Inanone and Dovi are quite consistent 1.48's-Rossi looking the strongest-maybe the extra fuels/tyres/engines and support might actually help ducati this weekend....

Covering the top 10... Just over for the top 12. Not quite the same blitz Marc has been doing all year.
