Tragedy overshadowed the World Superbike test held on the day after the Imola round of WSBK. Kawasaki rider Joan Lascorz crashed heavily between Tosa and Piratella, breaking his collarbone and shoulder blade, and fracturing his T6 vertebra. Lascorz was airlifted to the local Bologna hospital, where he underwent surgery to treat his injuries. An official statement from the team said that Lascorz was still in serious danger, and that his condition would not be known until tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.
Lascorz' crash came at the end of the first session, and cast a pall over the day's proceedings, but riders still went out to test the new Pirelli tires the Italian manufacturer had brought to the track. The tires - and better weather - made a huge difference, Kawasaki's Tom Sykes smashing the outright lap record at the track using race tires, and beating his previous best set on qualifiers. Ten Kate Honda's Johnny Rea also made good strides forward, setting the 2nd fastest time, half a second behind Sykes, while Crescent Suzuki's Leon Camier tested a much-improved new engine from Yoshimura, taking 3rd fastest on the day, ahead of BMW's Leon Haslam.
In the World Supersport sessions, it was Ten Kate Honda's Broc Parkes who ended the day fastest, finishing ahead of PTR Honda riders Jules Cluzel and Sam Lowes.

Not good. Hope Lascorz can
Not good. Hope Lascorz can recover. Anyone know what happened?
Lazcorz
lost control in the uphill section - MCN says he might've hit a wall on the outside of the track

Brrr..hate that part of the sport.
But great to see Camier up there. He almost shaved off a second from his best time of the weekend. That engine seems to be working. It would not only be good for him, but also for Suzuki and the sport if he manages to mingle with the top dogs this year.
Hopkins??
Whats going on with John Hopkins so far down the time sheets? He must be more damaged than was let on at the time. Expected him to be in the top 12 or very near.
HOPPER
Let us hope this is not going to be a repeat of his past World Championship seasons. The guy was good on his day, but the poor bugger was on the Suzuki MotoGP bike for way TOO long. Never forget his chase of Stoner at Brno in 2007 - when some of the more fancied riders had already flown the white flag. The GSX-R1000 is a very capable Superbike and Leon Haslam's race time set at Phillip Island in 2010 has not been bettered since. In other words, get a GSX-R1000 set up as well as the Alstare team did in 2010, put a motivated rider on it, and it can still win races. Now Camier is getting his confidence back and realises on the Suzuki he can push into corners without worrying about the front-end tucking under, he will get better results and then, with more confidence, he can win races. Hopkins? Time will tell.
I know Hopper is just back from injury
but I was looking for him to be higher up the charts all weekend.
In his wild card last year @ Silverstone he was near the front for part of the weekend and ended with a 5th and a 7th. This weekend there wasn't even a hint of him being at the track except for the one pass they showed on TV.
Hopefully it's just a "first race back after a long stretch of injuries" kinda thing since he crashed on the 1st day of a private test.
Ugh. Just hurts to hear about
Ugh. Just hurts to hear about - you're right, the worst part of this sport. Thoughts for Joan, and hoping for a full recovery ...
Huge highs and massive lows of racing
After a fantastic race weekend, we're slapped in the face by this. Lets hope that Joan can make a full recovery. The fitness levels of all these guys gives them the best possible chance, so fingers crossed.
Regarding the test, what is 'The Grinner' having for breakfast these days? By the sound of it a warmer Sunday could have seen him on the top step. Well done Tom (and Kawasaki) for getting so competitive.
How's he doing?
Has anyone read any more about Joan? Crikey he's been in the wars; two major accidents in two years, I was at Silverstone in 2010 for WSS, what a terrible crash, I confess feared the worst for both riders.
It doesn't need saying again but I will; these guys risk their lives and welfare for our entertainment, they all deserve our respect.
Get well Joan, and here's to a complete and speedy recovery.
