2023 Aragon World Supersport Superspole Result: Yellow Flag, Red Flag, Lap Record

World Supersport Superpole qualifying was twenty minutes off the MotorLand Aragon circuit to determine the grid positions for today and tomorrow's races. A cool wind crossed the track to keep conditions interesting. The session was interrupted by a red flag, adding the option of a two-stop strategy to the session, but the track was too long for this to make sense.

The premier class enjoyed some nice cloud cover for their final practice session and although the qualifying line-up was already decided, the lead changed hands throughout the session, until Marco Bezzecchi took over with three minutes remaining. The Italian obtained an advantage of two tenths of a second over Alex Marquez, while Luca Marini made a late move to join his teammate in the top three.

The heat was still enveloping the Buddh circuit on Saturday morning, although the intermediate class welcomed some cloud cover, allowing for many early improvements on the timesheets. After Tony Arbolino stole the show on Friday, rival Pedro Acosta was quick to demote him in P3 but a late red flag prompted a four-minute shootout where Manuel Gonzalez improved the lap record by another tenth from Acosta. The Spaniard had to settle for second, with Celestino Vietti joining the top three on the final lap.

The final practice session allowed the lightweight class another opportunity to improve the lap record and after Collin Veijer led the way on Friday and for much of P3, Diogo Moreira robbed him of top honours on the very last lap. The rookie’s benchmark had stood until the final five minutes of the session, when Veijer himself improved it but ultimately had to settle for second by six hundredths of a second.

What was the verdict on the first day of a historic Indian GP? "So fun," Jorge Martin said, speaking for pretty much everyone on the grid. "I really enjoy riding here. It was so, so fun." That fun translated into outright speed as well. "Straight away in the morning I felt good. then in the evening I was super competitive trying to improve some problems I had. The pace is good. the lap time was great also. So I’m very happy."

The Pramac Ducati rider wasn't the only rider to be impressed. "Really good," Marc Marquez agreed. "Better than everybody expected." The fears about safety had been allayed, which allowed the riders to get on with figuring out how to go as fast as possible without worrying about the consequences. "I think they did a very good job the last two months, and it’s true that we can improve a few things for next year but as riders we can give thanks because we can be in a normal way and just think about riding."
