2009 Assen 125cc Race Result - Last Lap Scrap Sorts Out Top Trio - Updated
Results and synopsis of the 125cc race at Assen:
Sergio Gadea emerged the victor of the 125cc race at Assen after a dramatic last lap saw the leading trio of Gadea, Nico Terol and Julian Simon almost running each other off the track. The trio had taken an early lead, quickly gapping Andrea Iannone and Bradley Smith, and had swapped the lead all race long. The race was decided on the final lap, after Terol got past the leader Simon in a desperate dive into the Ruskenhoek. He entered the corner ahead, but couldn't quite make it into the right flick before the left hander, and ran straight on across the paved section. Simon was forced wide, gifting the lead, and victory to Sergio Gadea. Gadea was lucky not to get knocked off though, as Terol rejoined the track almost T-boning the Aspar rider. Terol ended up 2nd, ahead of Julian Simon in 3rd. With both Gadea and Simon on the podium, the Aspar team crossed the landmark of 200 podiums in the world championships.
Behind Gadea and Simon, a grim batte unfolded between Andrea Iannone and Bradley Smith. Smith and Iannone put in increasingly desperate passes to try to take 4th, nearly running each other off a number of times. Smith eventually came out on top, but crossed the line in a bizarre pose, looking backwards at Iannone, staring the Italian down.
The best scrap of the race was the fight for 6th. A huge group fought bitterly over the position, the group thinning out through a process of attrition as riders crashed out, and in the end, it was Stefan Bradl who eventually took 6th, ahead of Jonas Folger.
UPDATE
After the race, Race Direction took another look at the incident between Nico Terol and Julian Simon, and awarded a 20 second penalty to Terol, putting the 2nd place man back to 8th.

So Terol gets a penalty and
So Terol gets a penalty and is off the podium while Simoncelli got nothing after Mugello and even complained about it, claiming that Spaniards never get punished.
Where exactly is the justice in that?
And apparently it can't be
And apparently it can't be appealed either. Seems inconsistent. Having said that, Terol definitely gained advantage, but so did Simoncelli.
Mmmm, don't like to see races decided like that.
