Marquez and Rins keep it up at Brno

Alex Marquez claims day’s second best time, with Alex Rins fourth.

After their one-two at the Indianapolis GP, the Repsol Moto3 riders continued on song at Brno in the opening practice sessions. Alex Marquez was second fastest today, whilst Alex Rins was fourth.

In pleasant temperatures and with stable weather conditions, the first session saw Rins third on the timesheet ‒0.447 off Maverick Viñales in first‒ and Marquez sixth, 0.871 behind the pacesetter.

The second practice runout was an entertaining affair, in which four riders exchanged places at the top of the combined standings. Viñales, Salom, Marquez and Rins were the main players, although the best time of the day would go to the first of the four. Marquez was second, Salom third and Rins fourth. Marquez lowered his morning time by almost 2 seconds, whilst Alex Rins took just under a second off his previous best.

Practice continues at Brno tomorrow, with the final free session and qualifying to decide the grid for the Moto3 Czech Republic GP.

“We're finding it hard to adapt to this circuit. Whilst these are only the first free practice sessions and there is still another practice before the qualifying session, we have not been able to find the ideal setup for the bike. Both in the morning and in the afternoon I managed to find a little pace, but in the final minutes the other riders also lowered their times and it was more difficult for us. We are going to get to work tomorrow to take that step up."

“It was a very positive first day at Brno. From the first moment I went out on the track, I felt very comfortable and found references quickly. During the day we have been trying different things. In the morning session we saved tyres with FP2 in mind, then in the afternoon we tried to see how far we could get with new tyres. We achieved a very good second place, so we have to continue in this way to get better for tomorrow, because we're still half a second off our times from last year and these times are sure to be lowered. We still have room for improvement, but it really helps that we are coming here off a podium less than a week ago ‒it is an added motivation."


POSITIVE FIRST DAY AT BRNO FOR TEAM GO & FUN GRESINI MOTO3

Team GO & FUN Gresini Moto3 made a positive start to the Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno today, with Niccolò Antonelli clocking the eighth fastest time in free practice. The Italian youngster still has plenty of room for improvement and a day of hard work ahead tomorrow as he looks for more consistency in corner entry and exit but optimism is high that he can take another step forward. Lorenzo Baldassarri had an interesting day, lapping quicker around one half of the circuit in the morning session and then quicker around the other half in the afternoon. Tomorrow he will look to find a compromise that improves his pace around the whole track and move up positions in the general classification.

Niccolò Antonelli (8th 2’ 09” 891) “I am pretty happy even though we need to continue working tomorrow to improve our performance in corner entry and exit. We are on the right lines and if we stay focused and work with conviction I am sure we can make a big step tomorrow. We need to because a good grid position is massively important for Sunday's race.”

Lorenzo Baldassarri (17th 2’ 10” 740) “It was a shame that we couldn't be more consistent around the whole track today. My fastest two sectors was reversed from the morning to the afternoon so we have to work on this and I am sure we will find something to make us more competitive before qualifying tomorrow afternoon.”

Fausto Gresini “We have started out on the right foot and it hasn't been a bad day. We need to improve a couple of small details but we are working in the right way and Niccolò can definitely do well here. We need concentration and hard work from the team all weekend. Lorenzo didn't have a bad day either and it is fair to say that he is at a disadvantage here because of his extra weight. Slipstreams play an important role here but it is difficult for him to use them. Anyway, he will get faster tomorrow and close the gap to the top.”


Salom amongst top three at Brno

Despite riding injured, Red Bull KTM Ajo rider goes third fastest on Friday at Brno Circuit. Arthur Sissis places fourteenth and Zulfahmi Khairuddin twenty-fourth.

23/08/2013 - Brno Circuit

The World Championship has returned to Europe for the tenth round of the year in Moto3. On the first day of the event, Luis Salom battled against an injury to his left foot and placed amongst the top three fastest of the day, with a time of 2:08.877. Arthur Sissis —fourteenth— and Zulfahmi Khairuddin —twenty-fourth— undertook their first setup changes for the Czech Republic GP.

On Wednesday he was diagnosed with a partial break of the heel of his left foot, from the crash suffered last Saturday in Indianapolis. This did not prevent Luis Salom from riding his KTM in practice on Friday. He took part in the opening session and also placed second in it, with a 2:09.506 lap 17 milliseconds off the top spot —the fastest time. His teammate Arthur Sissis —2:10.721— entered the top ten while Zulfahmi Khairuddin was twenty-first —2:12.058—.

The second free practice session of the day saw Salom able to lead part of the runout. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider saw himself capable of improving his times, but late traffic prevented that in the end. Like the current leader of Moto3, Sissis —2:10.682— and Zulfahmi Khairuddin —2:11.044— also lowered their morning times. However, the latter crashed at Turn 7 with three minutes remaining, preventing further progress.

Tomorrow will see the starting grid for Sunday decided. Last year, the qualifying session was good for Zulfahmi Khairuddin and Luis Salom, with first and second row starts, respectively.

"Today was a positive day of practice. My foot still hurts a lot and although it is a little less inflamed, when I have to change gears is when I suffer most. This is the situation and we cannot do anything but work hard and wait to see how the pain goes. Regarding the bike, I'm happy, we are improving a lot, everything is working pretty well. On Sunday I will see if I need an injection or not, but so far today I have not received one.

I want to thank all the doctors who treated me, both in Indianapolis and here in Brno, because without their help I could not ride with the severe pain in my foot. I am also grateful to the whole team, as they are doing a very good job and can help make it an important week for me."

Arthur Sissis

"The first session went better than the second. I felt pretty good on the bike this morning but in the afternoon the track was hotter and had more grip. I had a problem with the front end with used tyres, so we changed to the new ones. The last run did not go as we wanted, but I'm calm and confident that tomorrow we can lower our times from today, and we know what we need to improve.

The goal tomorrow is to be among the top ten in the qualifying session and I would like be on one of the first three rows of the grid."

Zulfahmi Khairuddin

"Today was not our best day. We tried to find the best set-up possible, but the feeling was the same all the time. Furthermore, in the second session I crashed and did not improve. The crash was heavy, but I was lucky not to be hurt. Anyway, the team is working to find solutions and I will give my all to get a good lap riding alone."


Positive outlook for RW Racing GP after first day

With 12th position for Jakub Kornfeil and 15th for Jasper Iwema at the end of FP2, RW Racing GP has a positive outlook for the Czech GP. Although especially Kornfeil would have preferred to be a bit faster on his home track he was confident to be further to the front in qualifying tomorrow.

RW Racing GP team manager Jarno Janssen was satisfied with the provisional positions of his riders in Brno. Jasper Iwema in particular made huge improvements compared to FP1 in the morning, when he set the 25th time. Iwema improved immediately in the second session and was in the top 10 for quite a while in the first half of practice.

Jakub Kornfeil needed a little more time to settle down and improve his best time. The only Czech rider in Moto3 had all eyes turned to him and had been more busy than normal on the first day of a Grand Prix.

Jakub Kornfeil (12): "I know the track well, as it is my home GP. But it was the first outing with the Kalex KTM in Brno and I have to get used to it. We made some changes to the suspension but decided to go back after it didn’t seem to work that well for me. We know what we have to do to improve and we certainly will tomorrow. We’ll move up a gear.’’

Jasper Iwema (15): "We’ve tried some things this morning and made a few big steps forward in the afternoon. I’m happy with the first day. Qualifying inside the top 15 is our goal for tomorrow, so we have to keep this level of performance or hopefully improve.’’


JONAS FOLGER MAINTAINS GOOD FORM IN FIRST SESSIONS AT BRNO

MAPFRE Aspar fifth fastest after first day, team-mate Eric Granado down in 33rd after struggling to adapt to Brno

Just five days ago they were battling for honours at Indianapolis but today the Moto3 riders were back on track on the other side of the Atlantic as the first free practice sessions took place for the Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno. With the field boosted by the addition of two wildcards in the shape of Jules Danilo and Andrea Migno the tenth round of the season sees a resumption of the battle between Luis Salom, Alex Rins and Maverick Viñales at the top of the standings, with Viñales gaining the upper hand today with a benchmark time of 2'08.504 – around half a second off the Moto3 lap record.

MAPFRE Aspar rider Jonas Folger started out this morning with the same bike set-up as Indianapolis and it served him well as he ended the first session with the fourth fastest time. As the day progressed the German struggled with some grip and vibration issues that slowed his progress but after finishing with the fifth fastest time, less than half a second off the top, the signs are positive if he can make improvements tomorrow. MAPFRE Aspar Team rookie Eric Granado endured a difficult first day, the Brazilian youngster struggling to adapt to the demands of Brno on a Moto3 bike having only ever ridden a Moto2 here before and finishing up down in 33rd position.

5th Jonas Folger 2.09.412 (25 laps): “We arrived here with the same set-up as Indianapolis, which was a good base, but we have made a few alterations as the day went on. The lap times improved but the bike was sliding around at the apex of the corners and we had some vibrations, especially on new tyres, that we weren't able to fix. It seems the bike is too stiff so we have played around with the suspension and this will be our main focus tomorrow. We have quite a lot of work to do.”

33rd Eric Granado 2.12.067 (31 laps): “I have struggled to get a feel for the track today. I rode here last year on the Moto2 bike but it is like a completely different track on a Moto3 and I think that is partly why I am having trouble. I need to improve my corner speed and exits. This morning we played around with the geometry and shortened the wheelbase to try and get the bike handling better, which helped, but we still have a lot of work to do. I need more confidence when it comes to opening the throttle. We are a bit lost at the moment but there is a long way to go in this Grand Prix and we will work hard to improve the situation tomorrow.”


MotoGP Moto3 – A first day of class for San Carlo Team Italia in Brno

Four Spanish riders on KTM lead, Fenati is 19th, Bagnaia 29th

After the first two sessions of Moto3 in Brno, Maverick Viñales has the best provisional time with a 2'08’’504. Romano Fenati (San Carlo Team Italia FMI FTR Honda#5) fought in the second group and closed less than a second off third row, while Francesco Bagnaia (San Carlo Team Italia FMI FTR Honda#4), after an encouraging FP1 closed earlier because of an innocuous crash, spent the whole afternoon session to improve the setup.

"Unfortunately we struggled a little bit but there's no need to worry. We still lack acceleration and the bike tends to understeer in corner exit, but with a few changes on the setup and engine delivery we can make a good QP tomorrow."

Francesco Bagnaia (San Carlo Team Italia FMI FTR Honda#4) 29th, 2'11.772

"I really like this track and I got off a good start in the morning, but the crash made me lose some time. In the afternoon the conditions changed a bit and I couldn't find the same confidence. My goal is to lap in the 2'09 mark tomorrow."

"We worked on the setup, making several comparisons today, but we're still a little behind our rivals. Yet we clarified where we need to intervene before next session, and we'll make some radical changes to bounce back. Our main opponent could be the weather, with the forecast predicting rain tomorrow."


Niklas Ajo places tenth to reach goal for the day

Avant Tecno KTM rider tenth fastest at Brno, twice placing inside the top ten in practice.

23/08/2013 - Brno Circuit

Niklas Ajo returned, two years on from his last appearance there, to Brno on Friday. The Avant Tecno KTM rider began preparations for round ten of the Moto3 season with a solid day of practice, in which he was amongst the top ten. Despite this and a best time of 2:10.088, the Finn believes that he still has considerable room for improvement.

One of the objectives for Niklas Ajo before starting the Grand Prix was to place in the top ten in every session of the weekend. He did that in the first free practice, setting the ninth fastest time. On his fourteenth lap of a total of fifteen, the young Avant Tecno KTM rider set his best times in each of the four sectors to clock a 2:10.666 lap.

In the final session of the day, the young rider held position in the top ten. Temperatures rose to 22ºC atmospheric and 31ºC on track, as the Avant Tecno KTM team continued to work to find the best setting for Ajo’s bike in different situations. The result was positive, with the rider taking half a second off his morning time and placing in the overall top ten. On Turn 7 of his final lap, he crashed –albeit without suffering any physical damage.

On the second day of work tomorrow, Niklas Ajo will seek to improve upon the thirteenth position on the grid from his only previous World Championship qualifying session at Brno.

"It hasn't been a perfect day of practice. The position and my best time were good, but I think I need a better feel on the bike. We've made a few changes to the rear and some were positive, but others felt strange. Today we have to work to find improvements for tomorrow and have better feeling, be more consistent and put in more fast laps. The crash had no consequences."


Kallio on the pace during opening day at Brno

Brno, Czech Republic - 23 August 2013: Mika Kallio got his Brno weekend off to a flying start, topping the timesheet in this afternoon's second free practice session. Scott Redding ended the day eighth, after making significant changes to the bike ahead of this afternoon's second 45-minute practice.

Kallio was fast from the start today, ending this morning's opening session sixth after making significant changes to the set-up of his Kalex Moto2 machine to better suit the characteristics of the Brno circuit. The 30-year-old Finn made further changes ahead of this afternoon's second session, to improve stability under heavy braking, with positive results. Kallio set the fastest time of the session on his final flying lap to end the day second on combined times, just 0.1s behind provisional pole sitter, Pol Espargaro.

Redding struggled to find a good feeling with the bike during this morning's 45-minute session, which he finished in 14th position and more than a second off the fastest time of Espargaro. The feeling was much better during this afternoon's second free practice session, with the current Moto2 Championship leader shaving almost a second off his lap time to finish eighth overall.

Livio Loi endured a difficult opening day at Brno, struggling to find a good feeling with his Kalex-KTM in both of today's 40-minute practice sessions. After finishing 21st this morning, Loi managed to improve his lap time by more than a second this afternoon, but slipped to 25th on combined times as his rivals also improved.

Jules Danilo made good progress on his second appearance as a wild card rider for the Marc VDS Racing Team. The 18-year-old Frenchman used this morning's free practice session to familiarise himself with the Brno circuit and to readapt to the Kalex-KTM after two races aboard a Suter Honda. Danilo improved his lap time by almost two seconds this afternoon, ending the day a creditable 31st.

Mika Kallio #36: 2nd - 2'03.230

"We made some big changes to the settings compared to Indianapolis, to make the bike more stable under hard braking and also through the fast and flowing turns here at Brno. We definitely went the right way, because the feeling was good from the start this morning. This afternoon we made some slight modifications to the rear of the bike, to reduce the pushing from the rear under braking, which gave me a much better feeling with the front; probably the best feeling I've had all season. Now we just need to be careful not to change too many things for tomorrow."

Scott Redding #45: 8th - 2'03.601

"I struggled a bit this morning to be honest. We went a bit the wrong way with the set-up and I couldn't find the good rhythm that's so important here at Brno. We made some improvements this afternoon, which allowed me to close a little on the top of the timesheet, but there is definitely more to come. We didn't want to try too many changes this afternoon, as I wanted to do some laps on the new rear Dunlop, which seemed to work pretty well. I improved my time this afternoon and I'm confident I can make another step tomorrow ahead of qualifying."

Livio Loi #11: 25th - 2'11.057

"The feeling with the bike is just not good at the moment. We made some changes to the bike after Indianapolis, but they don't seem to have worked. Going into the corners the bike just wants to run wide, it's like I have no control of the front at all, so it's difficult to make the lap times. Tomorrow we will go back to a set-up closer to that which we used at Indianapolis and, hopefully, this will give me a better feeling and more confidence with the bike."

Jules Danilo #95: 31st - 2'11.961

"I'm happy to be back on the Kalex-KTM and the feeling with the bike was good today. Now I can push again, without feeling like I'm riding over the limit all the time. This morning was a bit difficult, as I don't really know the track yet, and I wasn't carrying enough speed when I was lapping on my own. This afternoon was a lot better, as I had the visual references I needed to improve my lap time, even when on my own. Overall I'm happy about today, but if I can improve by another second tomorrow then I'll be even happier."

PRADITA SEARCHING FOR MORE CONFIDENCE AT BRNO

Doni Tata Pradita was able to improve his confidence from the morning session to the afternoon at Brno today as the first free practices took place for the Czech Republic Grand Prix. Doni was able to make a significant improvement and after finishing the day 29th fastest overall he is confident of further progress tomorrow morning before qualifying practice takes place in the afternoon.

Doni Tata Pradita (29th 2’ 05” 841) “I had a few problems this morning but we made the progress we were looking for in the afternoon and that gives me confidence for tomorrow. As soon as I felt comfortable I was able to start work with the team on improving the set-up of the motorcycle and I am sure if we can keep working like this for the rest of the weekend it can be a good Grand Prix for us.”

Fausto Gresini “After a lot of confusion at Indianapolis Doni was back to working in a methodical manner today and this is the way for him to make progress. He had a few difficulties this morning but in the afternoon he got to grips with the circuit and I am confident for tomorrow. ”


CRASH FOR WAROKORN AT BRNO

Thitipong Warokorn endured a painful first day in the Czech Republic today thanks to a crash in the first free practice session this morning that left him with a strained thigh muscle. The Thai rider battled bravely to try and complete as many laps as he could in the afternoon and build his knowledge of the circuit layout but he certainly wasn't in the ideal physical condition to ride.

Thitipong Warokorn (32nd 2’ 07” 043) “We could have done without the crash but it is all part and parcel of racing and I have to take it on the chin, even though it made for a painful afternoon. I was struggling on the bike but I tried my best to gather as much information as I could about the track and I am sure it will prove useful tomorrow.”

Fausto Gresini “Crashing forms part of racing and Thitipong just has to learn from the experience. Obviously the thigh problem meant that he couldn't ride to his maximum this afternoon but I am sure he will be fitter tomorrow and ready to follow the instructions and advice of the team.”


TORRES AND TEROL POSITIVE AFTER DAY ONE AT BRNO

MAPFRE Aspar riders happy with work done on traction and corner speed

The Moto2 World Championship continued apace at Brno this afternoon where two extra names in the shape of Gino Rea and Lucas Mahias were added to a packed entry list for the tenth round of the season. The more familiar name of Pol Espargaró was the dominant force on the opening day, however, the Spaniard on top of the standings for the majority of both free practice sessions before being dislodged by Mika Kallio in the closing stages.

With less than a second covering the top twenty riders the weekend is far from decided, however, and MAPFRE Aspar riders Jordi Torres and Nico Terol are still confident of having their say on Sunday despite finishing down in sixteenth and seventeenth place respectively. Nico was ninth this morning and Jordi tenth, before completing an exhaustive programme of set-up alterations aimed at improving traction and corner speed. The hard work done today should facilitate improvements tomorrow in the final free practice before qualifying takes place in the afternoon.

16th Jordi Torres 2.03.904 (35 laps): “I know we can be fast here at Brno but after the first session this morning we knew we had to make some changes to the bike to improve corner speed in particular. Overall we have a good set-up but I need to feel a bit more confident on the bike in the turns. This is a wide circuit with some long straights so we also need to improve our corner exit so that we don't lose out so much on the straights. We set a good pace this morning and then spent the afternoon playing around with the setting so even though we are in sixteenth we are not in bad shape and I think we've done a good job.”

17th Nico Terol 2.03.925 (31 laps): “I had a good feeling with the bike as soon as I went out this morning but then we had a tyre turn on the rim and it broke our rhythm. In the afternoon we went with a shorter wheelbase We wanted to see if we could get the bike handling better but with the harder front we didn't get the required response so we went back to the soft front and rear. We will take a step backwards towards our base setting tomorrow because it tends to work well at most tracks.”
