2011 World Superbike Official Test Dates Announced

The dates of the official tests for the World Superbike series were announced today by Infront Motorsports, the organizers of WSBK. The locations of the two official tests are no surprise: the first three-day test is to be held at Portimao, on Portugal's Algarve coast, from January 26th through 28th, 2011. The Portimao circuit is a favorite with most of the riders, and a big backer of the series, supporting the Parkalgar Honda team in World Supersport. The second test will take place at Phillip Island, on Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd of February, two days before the 2011 season opener at the Australian circuit.

The two official tests will not be the only times at which the World Superbike teams will be able to test, however. An unofficial test is scheduled for later in the month, from October 27th to the 29th, at which a large part of the grid is due to take place. New Sterilgarda Yamaha signing Marco Melandri will have to wait for another two weeks, though, as the Aragon test falls directly before the Portuguese MotoGP round at Estoril. Melandri will test the Yamaha at Valencia, on the Thursday after the MotoGP round.

BMW will remain on the Iberian peninsula, testing at Jerez from November 24th through 26th, then to Portimao on the 29th and 30th of the month. Aprilia and Yamaha, meanwhile will head down to Australia, for a private test at Phillip Island from November 30th through December 2nd, while Kawasaki will take advantage of the hot weather in Sepang to test for four days in January, between the 10th and the 14th.

Sepang?

I don't understand, what's the point for Kawasaki to test on a track that they won't race during the year? I know the importance of a good weather but there are certainly other opportunities at tracks that will be raced in 2011.

Melandri

I must say I am happy that Gresini and Honda are allowing Melandri to try out the Yamaha before the end of the year. I still always wonder why Suzuki never allowed Vermeulen to test the Kawasaki at the end of last year.

After the end of MotoGP season

Melandri, just like Vermeulen, is released after the end of the MotoGP season (to avoid potential injuries, problems with sponsors...) but before the end of the year. Vermeulen tested the Kawasaki multiple times in Japan and Europe before the end of 2009 ;-)

"Having had his hopes of sampling the bike during the Portimao post-season tests scuppered by Rizla Suzuki’s refusal to release him from his contract before the end of the 2009 MotoGP season, Vermeulen has instead been testing at the Autopolis circuit in Japan this week [november 2009]."
Here comes your mistake, he wasn't in Portimao for the first test before the end of the MotoGP season

He also tested in Cartagena, Spain, in december
